So sex-based insults aren't okay. But what about sex-based phrases. The one that sprung to mind was "attention whore." I tend to think that "whore" can be equally applied to men and women, but even so I wouldn't call someone a whore.
But is it okay to use words like bitch and whore in a non-insulting context?
Just curious.

Nope

Just sayin'.
yes.
Ok, now that I have actually reread the post... it totally depends what context you are using them in.
Hmmm... I've used the phrase attention whore. Whore doesn't bother me when used in that sense because it doesn't actually refer to someone's sexual activities, is equally applicable to men and women, and therefore doesn't seem to imply a moral judgment. I'll be interested to see what other people think.
Bitch always seems like an insult to me, unless you're actually talking about a female dog.
I call men bitches. Equal opportunity! And sometimes the shoe really fits.

Amongst friends and family, it really depends. I don't like it, but I know people that playfully throw aruond the word "bitch" and "whore" and to them, it's not a big deal. It's their business.
I always err on the side of catution and don't say those words in even a slightly playful context. I don't hang in those circles where calling someone a "bitch" is funny or empowering anyway. I've been called a "whore" just as a joke by a good friend of mine and I didn't mind, but that's the exception to the rule for me.
yeah I think it kind of needs to be a case by case basis. I don't use the word whore in really any situation cause honestly it is so insulting in any way. I use the word bitch from time to time mostly when referring to the fact that there are days I feel like I am in a bitchy mood or to take responsibility for being a bitch to someone. There are many people in my life that I don't feel it is correct to use that word in any way shape or form, and even the ones I feel free to use words like that I really am conscious not to use it as a descriptor of anyone else because to me that is just so very very disrespectful, even if they are being a bitch, it really won't help any situation and yeah it is an insult.
So I guess to sum it up, there are times that I will own the word bitch when my actions warrant it but I do not throw it at anyone else and I am very conscious about who I use it in front of because it is SUCH a loaded word.
